How to Choose the Right Memory Keepsake

Bear, cushion, blanket or animal? A simple guide to choosing the keepsake that fits the clothes you have, and the person you’re remembering.

When you’re ready to turn a loved one’s clothes into a keepsake, the next question is usually the hardest: what should I have made? There’s no wrong answer — it comes down to the clothing you have, who the keepsake is for, and what would bring you the most comfort. Here’s a gentle guide to help you decide.

Choosing by the clothing you have

  • One or two special garments — a single shirt, cardigan or dress is often perfect for a memory bear or a cushion.
  • A drawer or wardrobe full — when there’s more clothing than you can choose between, a memory blanket brings many pieces together into one keepsake you can wrap around yourself.
  • Something with special details — a breast pocket, a row of buttons, an embroidered logo or a favourite collar can be kept as part of a bear or cushion, so the details you remember stay.

Choosing by who it’s for

  • For yourself — think about what would comfort you most: something to hold at night, to rest on a chair, or to keep on the bed. There’s no need to be practical about it.
  • For a child or grandchild — little ones often take real comfort from something soft to cuddle. A memory bear or animal made from a parent’s or grandparent’s clothes can become a quiet companion.
  • To share among family — one garment can sometimes make more than one keepsake, so several people can each hold a piece of the same person.

Choosing by the occasion

Keepsakes aren’t only for grief. A wedding dress can become a bear to treasure, an outgrown school uniform can mark a milestone, and a graduation gown or set of scrubs can celebrate years of hard work.
